Vet & Grooming Fear Fix

The Vet & Grooming Fear Fix is a specialized cooperative care program designed to reduce handling sensitivity and build calm, voluntary participation in veterinary and grooming procedures, tailored specifically for the tiny bodies, fragile frames, and sensitive nervous systems of small breeds. Using systematic desensitization, counterconditioning, and consent-based training, we teach your small dog to actively “opt in” to care routines—transforming stressful appointments into predictable, low-stress experiences. This advanced program is a long-term investment in your small dog’s emotional well-being, improving cooperation, reducing fear-based responses, and supporting a lifetime of safer, stress-free veterinary and grooming care.

Training Objectives

Phase 1: Operant Consent

  • Goal: Give the small dog a “voice” to reduce the perceived need for defensive aggression or panic.
  • The “Start Button” Behavior: Teaching a specific consent position—such as a stationary chin rest—that allows the small dog to communicate, “I am ready for you to proceed.”
  • The Science of the Sniff: Using classical counterconditioning to turn clinical odors (antiseptics, alcohol, latex) into positive predictors of high-value rewards.
  • Arousal Management: Training the small dog to maintain a low heart rate and a regulated “thinking state” during physical exams, preventing escalation into a fight-or-flight sympathetic response..

Phase 2: Tactile Desensitization

  • Goal: Introduce triggers through successive approximation, progressing at the small dog’s individual neurological pace and physical stamina.
  • The “Mock Clinical Exam”: Simulating a full veterinary assessment—ear checks, small-paw handling, and dental exams—using established consent protocols from Phase 1.
  • Vibration & Auditory Conditioning: Desensitizing the small dog to the buzz of clippers, the whir of a Dremel, or the snip of nail trimmers through controlled, positive exposure.
  • Restraint Neutrality: Teaching the small dog to remain calm during necessary handling for vaccines, blood draws, or temperature checks without triggering opposition reflexes or feeling overwhelmed by physical pressure.

Phase 3: Real-World Professional “Dry Runs”

  • Goal: Generalize training from the home environment to real-world professional settings in South Charleston.
  • The “Happy Visit” Protocol: Coordinating with local clinics for brief visits where the small dog receives reinforcement in the lobby or on the scale, without invasive procedures.
  • Positive Muzzle Mastery: Conditioning a properly sized, lightweight muzzle as a positive, safety-oriented tool so it is viewed as neutral rather than aversive.
  • Clinical Equipment Neutrality: Ensuring calm behavior around grooming tables, tubs, and veterinary equipment such as scales and exam tables that can feel intimidating to tiny breeds.

Investment

  • Standalone Safety Consultation - $150 plus applicable sales tax
Includes a handling sensitivity audit tailored to small breeds.
  • “Stress-Free for Life” (6 Weeks) - $950 plus applicable sales tax
6 private sessions focused on advanced behavior modification and professional integration for small breeds. Includes a professional small-breed muzzle conditioning kit and 1-on-1 support during a scheduled grooming or veterinary appointment.

Cooperative care is built on trust. Our specialists reserve the right to modify training programs and duration based on your small dog’s individual arousal levels, physical sensitivity, and social maturity to ensure a confident, willing participant.
