Our specialized Mani-Padi (Nail & Paw Care) Training Program transforms high-stress paw handling into a cooperative, fear-free experience. Using cooperative care protocols and behavioral science, we teach your small dog to actively participate in their own grooming rather than forcing compliance.

Training Objectives

Phase 1: Desensitization & Consent

Goal: Build positive emotional associations with paw handling and grooming tools.
Touch Desensitization: Systematically conditioning your small dog to accept gentle handling of their paws, toes, and nails without pulling away or tensing up.
Tool Introduction & Noise Pairing: Desensitizing your dog to the sight, sound, and vibration of clippers, grinders, or files through low-stress incremental steps.
The “Start-Button” Behavior: Teaching your dog a reliable communication cue to signal when they are comfortable or when they need a pause, empowering them with choice during the grooming process.

Phase 2: Stress-Free Handling

Goal: Master safe, low-stress physical positioning for tiny bodies.
Positioning: Teaching optimal holds and surface setups (such as secure laps or elevated non-slip stations) designed specifically for small breeds to reduce vulnerability and strain.
Incremental Nail Maintenance: Breaking down the nail trim into manageable steps—touching a toe, applying light pressure, trimming a single tip—to ensure success without overwhelming the dog.
Arousal & Stress Regulation: Recognizing early physiological stress signals (lip-licking, freezing, whale eyes) and utilizing decompression techniques to keep the dog in a "rest-and-digest" state.

Phase 3: Generalization & Maintenance

Goal: Ensure lifelong cooperative grooming success at home and with professionals.
Surface & Environment Proofing: Practicing paw handling in different rooms or lighting conditions so the behavior generalizes beyond the training sessions.
Cooperative Maintenance Routines: Establishing a regular at-home grooming schedule that maintains the progress achieved during the program.
Bridging to Professional Care: Equipping your small dog with the emotional stability needed to handle veterinary and professional groomer nail trims with ease.
