The ESA Foundation Program acts as a high-value bridge between a standard pet and a task-oriented working companion, tailored specifically for small breeds and tiny puppies. This service is designed for individuals who require a small dog that can remain calm, focused, and neurologically regulated in various living situations and high-stress environments. This bundle is significantly more technical than standard obedience, utilizing the Structured Neutrality and behavioral science required for high-level support work.

Training Objectives

Phase 1: Emotional Regulation

Goal: Ensuring the small dog can regulate its internal emotional state before attempting to support a human.
Arousal Management: Teaching the small dog to transition from an “excited” state into a calm “Rest & Digest” state on cue — a critical skill for Emotional Support Animals (ESAs) living in calm, stable home environments.
Passive Public Neutrality: Training the small dog to become a “background character” — remaining calm, composed, and virtually invisible while the handler works, studies, or rests, regardless of environmental distractions.
The Science of the Sniff: Utilizing biological fulfillment and scent-based enrichment to help lower systemic cortisol levels, ensuring the small dog is mentally balanced and emotionally receptive before engaging in support-based behaviors.

Phase 2: Living Support & Sensory Integration

Goal: Developing the specialized behaviors required for dogs living in non-traditional housing environments or high-stress settings.
Advanced Duration Settles: Conditioning a reliable 60-minute “Down-Stay” in multiple environments, from home offices to public locations near South Charleston.
Tactile Grounding (DPT Foundations): Introducing the foundations of Deep Pressure Therapy (DPT), where the small dog learns to place controlled body weight on the handler’s lap or chest on cue to provide sensory regulation and tactile comfort.
Environmental Sensory Neutrality: Ensuring the small dog remains calm and unfazed by medical equipment, nursery equipment, sudden noises, or environmental changes while maintaining a “soft focus” on the handler.

Phase 3: The “Support Ready” Evaluation

Goal: Preparing both dog and handler for the standards required in support work and successful community integration.
CGC Mastery Integration: Incorporating the requirements of the AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test to provide tangible proof of a well-mannered, community-ready companion.
Foundational Task Introduction: Identifying and introducing the mechanics of one foundational support task tailored to the handler’s individual needs.
The Legal Advocacy Guide: Providing in-depth coaching on the legal distinctions between Emotional Support Animals and Service Dogs (HUD/FHA vs. ADA) to help handlers confidently navigate housing and public interactions.

8 private training sessions, a professional “Support Dog In-Training” small-breed vest or bandana, and comprehensive AKC CGC evaluation preparation.
