Training Objectives
Phase 1: The “Den” Association
- Goal: Transform the crate from a restrictive space into a high-value sanctuary for your small dog.
- Positive Emotional Imprinting: Using high-value rewards to build a positive Pavlovian response to the sight and scent of the crate environment.
- Choice-Based Entry: Teaching the small dog to enter the crate voluntarily on cue, creating a cooperative “start-button” behavior instead of forced confinement.
- Environmental Optimization: Evaluating crate placement, cozy bedding appropriate for small breeds, airflow, and enrichment to help the dog reach a calm “rest-and-digest” state quickly and efficiently.
Phase 2: Duration Building
- Goal: Build your small dog’s “solitude muscle” through structured, successful progressions.
- The “Invisible String” Drill: Gradually increasing distance and absence while maintaining a calm, emotionally regulated state inside the crate.
- Door Neutrality: Desensitizing the small dog to crate-door movement and sound to eliminate bolting, whining, or frantic exit behaviors.
- Quiet Reinforcement: Coaching owners on how to reward calm, quiet behavior without accidentally creating arousal or vocalization patterns.
Phase 3: Daily Life Integration
- Goal: Prepare your small dog for everyday routines, travel, and real-life situations.
- Departure Simulations: Desensitizing the dog to common “leaving triggers” such as keys, shoes, bags, and garage doors to reduce isolation distress.
